Several years ago, my teenage daughter took on a role as an underage compliance investigator for a local police department. Her job? To enter stores and attempt to buy cigarettes or alcohol using her real, valid underage ID.

To our surprise—and concern—she was often successful.

Roughly 20–30% of the time, cashiers and clerks sold her the age-restricted products. Not because they were malicious. Not because they didn’t care. But because they couldn’t do the math.

This was a wake-up call.

As an engineer, I know that the best way to prevent failure is to eliminate the chance of it happening in the first place. Human error, especially in fast-paced retail environments, is inevitable. What We Found
